Panthenol

The alcohol form of pantothenic acid, vitamin B5, which skin converts into the vitamin itself. Pantothenic acid is a building block of coenzyme A, which cells use in fat synthesis — including the lipids of the barrier. In pharmacy it appears as dexpanthenol in the ointments used for nappy rash, chapped nipples, minor grazes and tattoo aftercare, which is where its reputation comes from.

Ką jis daro ant odos

Two things at once. As a small water-binding molecule it hydrates the outer layer and reduces the tightness of dry skin. Beyond that it supports the repair of a damaged barrier and reduces the redness and irritation of skin that has been stripped, chapped or over-treated. It is the quiet ingredient in "soothing" products that is actually doing something.

Moderate: dexpanthenol has been tested in controlled studies of barrier repair and irritant dermatitis, including experimental models where skin is deliberately stripped and recovery is measured. The strongest data sit with the pharmacy-strength ointments rather than the 1-2% in a serum, but the direction is consistent and the risk of harm is close to zero.

Anywhere skin is irritated: after a retinoid ramp-up, after shaving, after sun, on chapped hands in winter. In leave-on products at 1-5%; in hair conditioners it coats and softens the fibre instead. It is a good default addition to a routine that keeps tipping into irritation.

Very well tolerated. Contact allergy exists but is uncommon, and is most often reported in people using dexpanthenol ointments repeatedly on damaged skin, where any ingredient has more opportunity to sensitise.

Excellent with ceramides and glycerin, and the standard partner for a retinoid or acid routine that has gone slightly too far. It also pairs well with niacinamide in a calming product.

The myth is that it is a vitamin supplement for skin — that applying B5 does what a deficiency correction would. Pantothenic acid deficiency is essentially unheard of in a normal diet, so nothing is being corrected. Panthenol earns its place as a humectant and barrier-repair ingredient, not as nutrition applied to the outside.
