Petrolatum

A semi-solid mixture of hydrocarbons refined from petroleum. Cosmetic and pharmaceutical grades — white petrolatum in the pharmacopoeias — are highly refined, which is the entire safety question and the entire difference from the crude material. It has been in medical use since the 19th century and remains one of the most-used substances in dermatology.

Ką jis daro ant odos

It is the most effective occlusive available: a film of it reduces water loss through the skin by more than 90%, an order of magnitude more than most plant oils manage. It contributes nothing chemically. It simply stops water leaving, which lets a damaged barrier rebuild itself, and it protects skin from friction, urine, saliva and cold wind.

Strong. It is first-line in atopic dermatitis, in chapping, in cracked heels and lips, and in wound aftercare, and it outperforms far more expensive products on the one measure it is for. It is also so unlikely to cause an allergy that it is used as the neutral base in which other substances are tested during patch testing.

Thinly on damp skin, last, over everything else. Its most valuable use is the one people skip: a thin layer over a moisturiser on cracked hands, heels or lips overnight. It does not absorb, and it is not supposed to. On the face, some people find it too heavy while others use it nightly with no problem.

Allergy is exceptionally rare. The realistic complaints are cosmetic — greasy, shiny, transfers onto pillowcases — and a subset of acne-prone people find it aggravating on the face. It should not be applied to a wound that is infected or that has not been cleaned.

Under EU cosmetics rules petrolatum may only be used where the full refining history is known and it can be shown that the substance it is produced from is not carcinogenic. That condition is the regulation dealing directly with the internet worry about petroleum products, and it is why cosmetic-grade material is not comparable to industrial residues.

It is the sealing layer over glycerin, hyaluronic acid or a ceramide cream — humectant first, occlusive on top. Do not apply it under a strong active expecting better penetration: occlusion increases absorption and can turn a tolerable retinoid into an irritating one.

The myth is that it suffocates skin. Skin takes its oxygen from the blood, not the air, and petrolatum is not a barrier to gas in any way that matters. The related myth, that it is carcinogenic, comes from unrefined petroleum fractions that contain aromatic contaminants — which is exactly what the refining requirement for cosmetic grades exists to exclude.
